5 Fandom Friday: Comic Characters that Deserve Their Own Screen Time

Hey, hey! So I’m still a  comic book n00b. I’m not afraid to admit it. The only one I’ve really READ so far is Saga, but I’ve got a nice little collection going (and a surprisingly long pull list) & I can already tell you who I would love to see in their own Movie/TV Show.

1. Scarlet Witch – I want a TV show that is all Wanda, all the time. I know enough about her history to know it would make a crazy exciting TV show & there would never be a shortage of canon material or even opportunities for show runners to go a little off-book. I want it and I want it NOW! Also, as much as I was actually impressed by Elizabeth Olsen’s portrayal of Wanda, I’d like to see this re-cast.

2. Quicksilver – You’d think that since Quicksilver would probably be pretty active in my Scarlet Witch TV show above, that it would satisfy my need to see more & more & more of him on screen. You’d think that, but you’d be wrong. I really loved Aaron Taylor Johnson’s portrayal in AoU, BUT nothing makes my heart as happy as Evan Peters in X-Men: DOFP. I want an Evan Peters Quicksilver movie. 2 hours of pure, glorious, snarky Pietro wreaking havoc on poor, unsuspecting souls.

3. Spider-Gwen – I’m gonna need to demand this, more than request it. I want a Spider-Gwen movie. It would be awesome if Emma Stone reprised her Gwen Stacy role, but I’d be fine with a re-cast for this. I just really want the whole Spider-Gwen AU in a movie that I know would become one of my comfort films.

4. Alana & Marko – Come on, don’t act surprised. You all saw this coming. It would be SO difficult to do this series justice on screen, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want it. Because I really, really want it. Maybe it could even be animated? And Fiona Staples’ epic artwork could just come to life? Oh crap. I love that. Yes. That. That is what we need.

5. Harley Quinn – I actually know very little about HQ’s story, but I know that she is a genius-level sassy pants/ badass and the proper portrayal of her on screen could really speak to a lot of women out there. If we could see her go through her abusive relationship with The Joker, but make it totally NOT the central part of the story & have her come out on the other side of that realizing she’s stronger without him, it’d be kind of great, right?

Big thanks to Super Space Chick & The Nerdy Girlie for getting us all rolling on 5 Fandom Fridays! If you want to see more, just track the #Fandom5 tag on Twitter 🙂

5 Fandom Friday: Nerdiest Things I’ve Ever Done

YAY, FRIDAY! Am I right? Today’s 5 Fandom Friday topic is “5 Nerdiest Things You’ve Ever Done”. I’ve got a list long enough to fill a notebook, as many of my friends would attest to, but these are my favorites:

1. Got a Star Wars tattoo.

This is a memorial tattoo for one of my best friends from high school, who committed suicide in 2009. It’s a really dark mark on my past, but the tattoo makes me happy every time I think about it. I always remember the fun times we had & how we bonded over Star Wars. I still remember the first time I ever learned that the Expanded Universe existed & he owned all the books. We spent a lot of time just hanging out in his bedroom & him giving me major Star Wars lessons.

2. Participated in a SWATH Tournament.

SWATH was started by our group of friends like a zillion years ago (2007). I started going to tournaments in 2009, when I began dating my now-husband. We build tournament brackets (usually at random) filled with characters from comic books, video games, anime, movies, etc., and then the battles begin. We’ll sit around for hours arguing (sometimes very heatedly) over who would win each battle, including the exact method the character would use to defeat his/her opponent. Sometimes things get REALLY creative and/or characters from previous battles will get involved in what we like to call “SWATH moments”. Then we continue moving through the bracket until we have a champion.

3. Joined SWATH Forums.

Lol is this a cop-out? I don’t care. I just joined the SWATH forums this year, and it’s been an entirely different experience than the live tournaments I’ve been going to for 6 years.  There are online battles that run through the SWATH “season” when we have no live tournaments going on. We also just talk about all kinds of nerdy shit, including Cons, movies, comics, and random randomness. I love those guys. Also, I made a forum banner. But I kind of hate it. Thoughts?

4. My last B&N Purchase.

I’m only including this because it’s the first time someone other than my friends has openly commented on my nerdiness. I went in specifically for my copy of Fangirl’s Guide to the Galaxy, and when I couldn’t find it I asked an associate for help. It took her about 15 minutes to find it in their system because she couldn’t figure out whether “Fangirl” had a space in it or not *oy*. Anyway, she led me back to Women’s Studies (really?), which is where that book is shelved & took one look at it and then at me and asked “is this for you?”…ummmm, yes. Yes it is. Thank you for your help.

I proceeded to browse for another 20 minutes or so & then I grabbed the Star Wars issue of Vanity Fair (because, come ON!) and went to the check-out, where she was the only register open. As she was ringing me up she says “wow, you really are a nerd, huh?”. Damn straight, lady. Nice to meet you.

5. Started this blog!

Let’s be honest with ourselves, it’s a pretty nerdy thing to want to spend your days writing about nerdy things. Obvi. But it’s by far one of the best things that has happened to me in ages. Because you’re here, reading it. And that’s pretty effing cool.

5 Fandom Fridays were started by The Nerdy Girlie & Super Space Chick, and for that, I thank them ❤

 **EDIT**

BONUS! I just remembered one more that I have to share!!

6. Avengers Marathon.

When the first Avengers movie came out in 2012, our local theater did a whole marathon of all the Marvel movies that had been released up to that point. It started at like 11AM on a Thursday, so I had to take the day off work. The marathon consisted of: Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America, and finally the midnight premiere of The Avengers (13 hours of film, 15 hours spent in the theater). This was probably one of the best days of my life – just hanging out in the movie theater, watching comic book movies with my friends & getting 25% off concessions! Oh, and smuggling in tiny bottles of alcohol to dump into my Icee didn’t hurt, either. ❤

Five Fandom Friday: Characters I Would Name My Children After

fandom.5.friday

I’m a little tardy this week, but I couldn’t NOT participate because this is such a good prompt, so let’s just forgive & forget, shall we?

This week’s 5 Fandom Friday is Characters I Would Name my Children After.  Now, I clearly already have a child, who is named after my maternal grandmother. My grandma’s name was Doris Evelyn & my munchkin is Evelynne Grace. I spent a ton of time with my grandparents as a small child, and ever since my grandmother passed when I was in 7th grade, I knew I was going to name my first daughter after her.

I’m really not planning on having any more kids, but here are some names I would totally choose in the event that changes:

1. Arya.

Arya

2. Felicity.

smoak

3. Luna.

luna

4. Xander.

Sensitive-Xander-Harris

5. Oliver.

oliver

BONUS. My top 2 pet names:

1. Thea

thea

2. Harley

harley

I’m just now realizing that this post is a little Arrow-centric. That was not intentional. I’ve just been catching up on the last few weeks & I guess it’s stuck in my mind. Plus they’re just great names with great characters associated to them 🙂

Until Next Time ❤

Five Fandom Friday: Things I’ve Bought But Haven’t Read/Watched/Played Yet

fandom.5.friday

Oh man. This week’s Five Fandom Friday comes on a giant guilt-trip roller coaster! One of my biggest weaknesses is impulse shopping (especially books), so I’ve got a LOT of things to list here… I’ll try to narrow it down to the top 5, though.

#1 Vision & The Scarlet Witch Issues 1-4

vsw

To be fair to myself, I’ve only had these a couple of weeks. I picked them up at NewBo Con  at the beginning of February from the Geek City Games booth under some serious pressure from the salesperson *cough* brother-in-law, I’m looking at you. Anyway, I’m really excited to read these because I made a killer (albeit hasty) Scarlet Witch costume for Halloween. I usually refuse to dress as someone I don’t know anything about, so I made a point to read Wanda’s full Wiki page before Halloween & I was really intrigued by her back story & character arc. I’ve wanted to read more about her ever since, and when I found these hanging in the box, I couldn’t have passed them by, regardless. I’ll probably pick them up once my current reading list lightens up a little. Definitely before we go see Age of Ultron. I can’t wait to see these characters on the big screen (Paul Bettany? Yes please!)

#2 Cinder

Cinder by Marissa Meyer

Ok, so this was actually a gift from my bestie LAST Christmas (I’m talking 2013) and I haven’t touched it yet. It is definitely on my list for this year, though. I’ve always loved fairytale re-tellings & have heard awesome things about the series. I actually just picked up Cress for my Kindle yesterday, so I mean business. The bonus is that by the time I actually get around to reading it, the final book will probably be released & I won’t have any of that pesky waiting to find out what happens.

#3 Dead Until Dark

Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris

This one’s embarrassing. I have read the first few chapters of the book – maybe 3-4 years ago, when True Blood was in season 3 or so. I actually own three copies of this – Paperback, E-Book, and Audio Book. And I STILL haven’t read it. I don’t know what it is, but those first few chapters just didn’t pull me in. It’s definitely not a convenience factor, because I don’t know how much more convenient I could have made it for myself. I’m not really sure why I bought the E-Book after I already had the paperback – maybe I thought I lost it? But we got the audiobook to listen to on a trip to visit my in-laws in Missouri, which is about an 8-hour drive. We listened to it for maybe 40 minutes before we were both falling asleep from the narration. It’s a little too soothing, I think. Haha. This is actually on my POPSUGAR reading challenge for this year as either a book that inspired a TV show or a book you’ve started but haven’t finished yet. I’ll get there. I hope.

#4 The Siren

The Siren by Kiera Cass

I bought this after I read the first two books in the Selection series because I loved Kiera Cass’s writing. It’s been sitting on my Kindle for a year, now, constantly getting passed up for other YA Lit & I’m not really sure why. I love, love, LOVE the Selection & can only imagine this will be a great read. I just never reach for it when I’m ready to start a new book.

#5 American Psycho

American Psycho (2000)

I don’t really buy many movies that I haven’t seen already, but I knew this was going to be a great movie, so I added it to my stack when the movie store I worked at (6 YEARS AGO) had a sale – it was only $4, after all. Now I actually own two copies of it – DVD & Bluray – because my husband got it when he bought his PS3 & it became one of very few duplicate titles when we merged our collections (I think Dodgeball & Anchorman were the only other two that were duplicated…so take that as you will).  I’m not really sure why I’ve never watched it. I mean, I know it’s going to be good. I guess I’m just rarely in the mood for (what I assume to be) a thriller/horror movie. And when I am in the mood for one, my husband usually gets to pick since he loves those movies & rarely gets to watch them with me.  I should seriously rectify this issue…maybe around Halloween 🙂

BONUS:

Choose Your Own Autobiography

I got Neil Patrick Harris’ book “Choose Your Own Autobiography” for Christmas this year & haven’t read it yet. It looks hilarious, but I’m afraid I’m going to be too confused by the format. It’s so different, but I’m really looking forward to it – if I can fit it in among the rest of my reading list this year. Eep!

5 Fandom Friday: Fictional Couples

fandom.5.friday

Well, I decided to join in on 5 Fandom Fridays with Super Space Chick & The Nerdy Girlie. I have been following both for only a few weeks, but I love reading everyone’s roundups on Friday mornings – so I thought I should be a participant, rather than a lurker.

This week is all about love, because Valentine’s. Duh. So here’s a list of my top 5 fictional character pairings. I don’t usually ship characters myself, so I’m just going with favorite couples that are actually couples. And….go.

The Ruby Circle | Richelle Mead

1. Sydney Sage & Adrian Ivashkov (Bloodlines). I’m only halfway through the 3rd book of this series, but I’ve been obsessed with Adrian since Vampire Academy. I was really rooting for his happiness in that one, but I think it’s definitely going to happen in this series. For real. I love Adrian’s enigmatic personality & how he completely balance’s out Sydney’s neuroses. I’m a wholehearted believer of the “opposites attract” trope when the characters are solidly planted at opposite ends of the personality spectrum.  I can’t wait to see how this relationship plays out in the last half of the series!

Lafayette & Jesus

2. Lala & Jesus. True Blood consumed a lot of my life while it was on the air, and I loved nothing more than watching Lafayette & Jesus fall in love. They are so devoted to one another & it kills me to think how happy they could have been if they had only lived ANYWHERE other than Bon Temps.  I love Lafayette SO much that I can’t bring myself to read the books because I’ve heard he’s not in them. WHAT? Unacceptable. I’ll probably still read them, anyway. Obviously.

Felicity Smoak + Oliver Queen

3. Felicity & Oliver. Dear GOD, just be together already! You want it, we want it. Just do itttttt. It makes my heart hurt to think about how close they are to perfect happiness.

kbell-fanboys-2-o

4.  Windows & Zoe. Ok, I’m getting to squee levels in my head, here. I can’t even express how much I love the movie Fanboys. And it’s even harder to explain how much I love Windows (Jay Baruchel) and Zoe (Kristen Bell). This is one of those relationships that plays out in an exaggerated version of how it would have happened in real life (I mean, the whole movie is just over-the-top, so what do you expect??). I love that Zoe can hold her own with the boys  in the comic shop & that she swears like a sailor and isn’t afraid to show her boobs to prove a point. I love that Windows is so laser-focused on his online girlfriend that he’s oblivious to anything going on around him. And while the culmination of their feelings for one another is a little cringe-worthy, it’s still got a lot of heart & makes you believe in love for nerds everywhere. I could probably write an entire tome about this movie.

Tom-and-B-Elanna-star-trek-couples-31792834-500-340

5. B’Elanna Torres & Tom Paris. The ultimate OTP for me, is B’Elanna & Tom Paris (Star Trek: Voyager). This is the first adult relationship I watched unfold on screen & it’s among the most realistic fictional relationships I think I’ve ever seen. They are completely devoted to one another, but that doesn’t mean they like each other all the time. Their personalities clash & there is some pretty intense drama, but they always come back because they love each other.

Top 3 Honorable mentions:

Buffy + Spike

Buffy + Spike. I knew this one would cause a lot of controversy, but it’s one I’ve always felt strongly about. I’m currently re-watching the series & will hold my opinions until I’m all the way through, since the last time I saw it I was around 16 years old. Re-watching as an adult has changed my opinion of a lot of things about the series, so far. But as of the middle of Season 5, I’m still team Spike.

Eric-and-Jason-have-sex-True-Blood-3

Jason Stackhouse + Eric Northman. Come ON. This was so hot. Who didn’t love it?

The One

America & Maxon. Oh god, The Selection series. How it has invaded my mind on many a sleepless night. Seriously. I finished The One way back in May and I STILL have dreams about the characters. Maxon Schreave is probably one of my biggest fictional crushes.  America’s a little too flip-floppy for me though.

There you have it. All in the mood for romance this weekend. This was really fun & I can’t wait to participate in next week’s 5 Fandom Friday! How about you? Any OTP’s that you’re super passionate about?

Until next time ❤
