5 Fandom Friday! 5 Fictional Pets I Wanna Adopt

My goodness, I miss 5 Fandom Fridays! What is wrong with me? Why do I think I’ll be fine skipping a week? It makes me so sad when I don’t get to hang out with everyone for 5FF!

This week’s prompt is hella cute: 5 Fictional Pets I Want to Adopt, and I’ve put a lot of thought into this. This list is, for once, in order of want.

5. Marcel (FRIENDS)

Sure, he’s kind of a little shit, but he’s so cute & smart & loyal. I’d snuggle him for sure.

4.  FalKor

Not TECHNICALLY a pet, but I want a Luckdragon!! Adventures abound!

3.  Abraxos

Loyalty and ferocity. Perfect for a badass pet.

2.  Lying Cat

Heh. The cake is a lie, you guys. Don’t even pretend you don’t want a Lying Cat.

1. Hedwig

Because duh.

So, yay for 5FF! Created by Kristin & Megan! Check out #5FF or #Fandom5 to see more!

5 Fandom Friday: Favorite Fictional Fashion

Missed last weeks Fandom Friday. Womp, womp. But this one is so up my alley, I couldn’t stay away. I’m a little short on time, but here are the top 5 characters with my favorite fictional fashion!

1. Buffy Summers, Obvi. – Who else could kick major vampire ass in this outfit?

2. Clarissa Darling – SO nostalgic! Lol.

3. Charlie Bradbury – closest to my own personal style

4. Lemon Breeland/ Zoe Hart – style I obsess over

5. Felicity Smoak – girl crush!

5 Fandom Friday: Comic Characters that Deserve Their Own Screen Time

Hey, hey! So I’m still a  comic book n00b. I’m not afraid to admit it. The only one I’ve really READ so far is Saga, but I’ve got a nice little collection going (and a surprisingly long pull list) & I can already tell you who I would love to see in their own Movie/TV Show.

1. Scarlet Witch – I want a TV show that is all Wanda, all the time. I know enough about her history to know it would make a crazy exciting TV show & there would never be a shortage of canon material or even opportunities for show runners to go a little off-book. I want it and I want it NOW! Also, as much as I was actually impressed by Elizabeth Olsen’s portrayal of Wanda, I’d like to see this re-cast.

2. Quicksilver – You’d think that since Quicksilver would probably be pretty active in my Scarlet Witch TV show above, that it would satisfy my need to see more & more & more of him on screen. You’d think that, but you’d be wrong. I really loved Aaron Taylor Johnson’s portrayal in AoU, BUT nothing makes my heart as happy as Evan Peters in X-Men: DOFP. I want an Evan Peters Quicksilver movie. 2 hours of pure, glorious, snarky Pietro wreaking havoc on poor, unsuspecting souls.

3. Spider-Gwen – I’m gonna need to demand this, more than request it. I want a Spider-Gwen movie. It would be awesome if Emma Stone reprised her Gwen Stacy role, but I’d be fine with a re-cast for this. I just really want the whole Spider-Gwen AU in a movie that I know would become one of my comfort films.

4. Alana & Marko – Come on, don’t act surprised. You all saw this coming. It would be SO difficult to do this series justice on screen, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want it. Because I really, really want it. Maybe it could even be animated? And Fiona Staples’ epic artwork could just come to life? Oh crap. I love that. Yes. That. That is what we need.

5. Harley Quinn – I actually know very little about HQ’s story, but I know that she is a genius-level sassy pants/ badass and the proper portrayal of her on screen could really speak to a lot of women out there. If we could see her go through her abusive relationship with The Joker, but make it totally NOT the central part of the story & have her come out on the other side of that realizing she’s stronger without him, it’d be kind of great, right?

Big thanks to Super Space Chick & The Nerdy Girlie for getting us all rolling on 5 Fandom Fridays! If you want to see more, just track the #Fandom5 tag on Twitter 🙂

5 Fandom Friday: Fictional Characters I Identify With

I think the best part about being a fiction lover is finding a character that resonates with you on a molecular level. I’m pretty sure I’ve talked about all of these characters at one time or another, but my personality is a blend of all of them & it’s kind of like they’re a part of me. Without further ado:

5 Fictional Characters I Identify With

1. Zoe (Fanboys)

Equal parts nerdy and crass, Zoe is basically me. My nerd culture knowledge is probably a few lightyears behind hers, but I might be able to out-crass her, so I think it evens out in the end. She surrounds herself by nerdy boys all day long and acts as kind of a den mother to them. That is definitely an experience I can relate to.

2. Cisco Ramon (Flash)

Aside from the fact that I consider myself merely of  average intellect, everything else about Cisco’s personality resonates with me. He is quirky and loyal and unapologetically himself.  He isn’t afraid to show his excitement over anything and frequently geeks out in the most hardcore ways. He is just a joyful person, which is something I absolutely strive to be.

3. Bianca Piper (The DUFF)

I haven’t seen the movie, so I’m not sure this all applies to Mae Whitman’s portrayal of the character, but I see Book Bianca as snarky and intelligent, albeit slightly cynical. While I realize I’m being contradictory by identifying with the joyfulness of Cisco Ramon and the cynicism of Bianca Piper, isn’t that what humans are? Walking contradictions? There are days when I just FEEL like Bianca. Insecurities and general grump-itude. Nothing a little sex therapy can’t take care of though, #amiright?

4. Jess (New Girl)

I’m actually SUPER behind on New Girl, but this still holds true. Jess is quirky af. No denying it. She’s super passionate about a lot of things, but especially about her friends/family. Sometimes they look at her like she has two heads, but they love her back, and just as fiercely. THAT is something that hits me way down deep. Sometimes I’m talking to my husband or my mom or my best friend & I can see their eyes start to glaze over. It doesn’t mean they don’t love me, it just means they’re overwhelmed by my extreme passion for that particular subject matter. Which is basically all subject matter.

5. Charlie Bradbury (Supernatural)

A nerdy badass with a taste for adventure. I just ADORE Charlie, and have since her very first appearance on the show.  *NO SPOILERS, PLEASE* because I’m way far behind on Supernatural right now, too. But Charlie’s character development over the last few years has been one of my favorite things to watch. She’s constantly exploring and learning new things about herself to become the person she’s always dreamed of being. Even if it’s a risk & could potentially backfire. Plus, Felicia Day, so…

Honorable Mention: Nora (The New Guy)

This was one of my favorite movies when it first came out & there’s just something about Nora that has been so relatable. Maybe it’s just the fact that Zooey Deschanel is super relatable to me, but idk. She plays bass & is a hardcore feminist & not afraid to speak her mind. I love her.

Clearly I identify most with quirky-yet-social types, because that’s just me. If someone’s willing to put up with my weird, we’ll be just fine.

5 Fandom Friday: Nerdiest Things I’ve Ever Done

YAY, FRIDAY! Am I right? Today’s 5 Fandom Friday topic is “5 Nerdiest Things You’ve Ever Done”. I’ve got a list long enough to fill a notebook, as many of my friends would attest to, but these are my favorites:

1. Got a Star Wars tattoo.

This is a memorial tattoo for one of my best friends from high school, who committed suicide in 2009. It’s a really dark mark on my past, but the tattoo makes me happy every time I think about it. I always remember the fun times we had & how we bonded over Star Wars. I still remember the first time I ever learned that the Expanded Universe existed & he owned all the books. We spent a lot of time just hanging out in his bedroom & him giving me major Star Wars lessons.

2. Participated in a SWATH Tournament.

SWATH was started by our group of friends like a zillion years ago (2007). I started going to tournaments in 2009, when I began dating my now-husband. We build tournament brackets (usually at random) filled with characters from comic books, video games, anime, movies, etc., and then the battles begin. We’ll sit around for hours arguing (sometimes very heatedly) over who would win each battle, including the exact method the character would use to defeat his/her opponent. Sometimes things get REALLY creative and/or characters from previous battles will get involved in what we like to call “SWATH moments”. Then we continue moving through the bracket until we have a champion.

3. Joined SWATH Forums.

Lol is this a cop-out? I don’t care. I just joined the SWATH forums this year, and it’s been an entirely different experience than the live tournaments I’ve been going to for 6 years.  There are online battles that run through the SWATH “season” when we have no live tournaments going on. We also just talk about all kinds of nerdy shit, including Cons, movies, comics, and random randomness. I love those guys. Also, I made a forum banner. But I kind of hate it. Thoughts?

Swath Signature low res

4. My last B&N Purchase.

I’m only including this because it’s the first time someone other than my friends has openly commented on my nerdiness. I went in specifically for my copy of Fangirl’s Guide to the Galaxy, and when I couldn’t find it I asked an associate for help. It took her about 15 minutes to find it in their system because she couldn’t figure out whether “Fangirl” had a space in it or not *oy*. Anyway, she led me back to Women’s Studies (really?), which is where that book is shelved & took one look at it and then at me and asked “is this for you?”…ummmm, yes. Yes it is. Thank you for your help.

I proceeded to browse for another 20 minutes or so & then I grabbed the Star Wars issue of Vanity Fair (because, come ON!) and went to the check-out, where she was the only register open. As she was ringing me up she says “wow, you really are a nerd, huh?”. Damn straight, lady. Nice to meet you.

5. Started this blog!

Let’s be honest with ourselves, it’s a pretty nerdy thing to want to spend your days writing about nerdy things. Obvi. But it’s by far one of the best things that has happened to me in ages. Because you’re here, reading it. And that’s pretty effing cool.

5 Fandom Fridays were started by The Nerdy Girlie & Super Space Chick, and for that, I thank them ❤

BONUS! I just remembered one more that I have to share!!

6. Avengers Marathon.

When the first Avengers movie came out in 2012, our local theater did a whole marathon of all the Marvel movies that had been released up to that point. It started at like 11AM on a Thursday, so I had to take the day off work. The marathon consisted of: Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America, and finally the midnight premiere of The Avengers (13 hours of film, 15 hours spent in the theater). This was probably one of the best days of my life – just hanging out in the movie theater, watching comic book movies with my friends & getting 25% off concessions! Oh, and smuggling in tiny bottles of alcohol to dump into my Icee didn’t hurt, either. ❤

5 Fandom Friday: Most Binge-Worthy Shows

I’ve always been a binge-watcher. Even before instant streaming was a thing, I’d always wait until a season of a TV show came out on DVD or iTunes, rent/buy them, and spend an entire weekend curled up in the Lay-Z-Boy in my parents’ basement to power through the whole thing. Most notably, I did this with Grey’s Anatomy in high school.

Now that we have so much TV content available at our fingertips, this list could really go on forever.  Buckle up!

My Top 5 Most Binge-Worthy TV Shows:

5. Orange is the New Black

There’s really nothing that needs said about this series – it is FANTASTIC. Exciting, shocking, and completely different from anything else on TV. If you haven’t watched it, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? Unless, of course, you have a problem with language & violence, in which case, steer clear.

4. Supernatural

Definitely one of my favorite shows of all time. I’ve been watching since 2009, when a guy I was dating had it on at his house and I was like “OMG WHAT IS THIS MAGICAL TV SHOW?”. I will always remember the episode – Season 4, episode 16, “On the Head of A Pin”. If you’re a SPN fan, you know how amazing that episode was. I immediately went to the video store & rented seasons 1-3 and finished them in about a week with my roommate.

3. Daredevil

Just finished this a couple weeks ago & it DEFINITELY deserves this spot. Netflix did an amazing job with a character that had been essentially made into the laughing stock of the superhero world by Marvel & Ben Affleck in 2003.  I’ll admit I was skeptical when the series was announced, but Charlie Cox is phenomenal as Matt Murdock and the dark tone of the show is much more conducive to the tone of the comics. It’s a solid A+.

2. Breaking Bad

Yet another show that if you haven’t seen it I will ask you WHY, GOD, WHY?! Just watch it. It’s incredible. Intelligent and witty while being so unbelievably dark and twisted.  It’s not even one of my “favorite” shows, because something that dark just cannot be placed in my favorites, BUT it 100% deserves this spot on my list because I appreciate how groundbreaking it was.

1. Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Still my favorite show of all time. Just hearing the theme song makes me giddy on a thousand different levels. You can only understand if you’re in the club.

Honorable Mentions (because I can’t keep it at just 5):

Star Trek (any series)  //  Game of Thrones // How I Met Your Mother //  Flash //  Gilmore Girls  // Arrow //  The Vampire Diaries

honorable mentions

And, just for funsies, once I’m all caught up on the current episodes of my favorite shows  – seriously I’m really far behind on S.H.I.E.L.D, Supernatural, American Horror Story, and Grey’s Anatomy – these are the ones I plan to watch next!

Top 5 Upcoming Binges:

1. Orphan Black

2. Chuck

3. Sons of Anarchy

4. Friends

5. Gotham

How about you? Any suggestions based on what I’ve listed above? I’m a TV series junkie, so I’d love some more recommendations!

5 Fandom Friday – Favorite Fictional Moms

I LOVE this week’s 5FF. Moms are everything. I’d be completely and utterly lost without mine, so I’m excited to start Mother’s Day Weekend by talking about some of my favorite FICTIONAL mothers!

1. Lorelai Gilmore. Duh. Obviously. Was there any question? Lorelai is almost the exact kind of mother I want to be (if we could just subtract the majority of the unhealthy co-dependence). The relationship she has with Rory is something I think most girls who grew up watching GG were incredibly envious of. An honest relationship where a mother & daughter confide in one another is all I’ve ever wanted for me  & kiddo. Hopefully I’m well on my way.+

2. Rosemary Penderghast. Ok, this might seem like an odd choice, but EVERY time I watch Easy A, I am giddy over the relationship between Olive & her mother. I love the snarky banter & the sarcasm, but there’s obviously an abundance of unconditional love. Allowing a child to flourish & make their own mistakes, while still being there to catch them if they fall – that’s the ultimate goal.

3. Molly Weasley. How about this for a change of pace? Molly Weasley is the ULTIMATE mama-bear mother. She is fiercely protective of her children, offers unconditional love, and even acts as a mother to her children’s friends. You know that every single bone in her body is filled with maternal instinct. I think this badass mama is popping up on everyone’s list today – and she deserves to!

4. [Mini-Spoiler?] America Singer. Just finished The Heir, and obviously can’t stop talking about it. I mean my Fangirl mode is set to 11/10 right now. America turned out to be THE BEST MOM. She was always so devoted to her family that I knew she would be, but damn. It’s super good. And that’s all I have to say about that. Which leads me to…

5. Mrs. Gump. I love Forrest Gump. It’s an absolutely timeless movie. And Mrs. Gump is just the sweetest little southern mother. She would (and kind of does) do anything for her son.  Never concerning herself over his “disabilities”, but encouraging him to do whatever he wants. Good mama status.

Who are your favorite fictional moms? Leave me a comment or tell me on twitter with the tag #Fandom5!

Thanks to The Nerdy Girlie & Super Space Chick for starting 5 Fandom Fridays! I love connecting with everyone at the end of the week!

5 Fandom Friday – 5 Games I Love to Play

You guys, I have missed my 5 Fandom Fridays for the last couple weeks! I really love this link-up, so I’m super glad to be participating again! This week’s topic is 5 Games I love to Play, and while I’m not a huge video-gamer – specifically because my hand-eye coordination is SO terrible – there are a few, plus some tabletop/card games that I get seriously excited over.

1. Cards Against Humanity. I think we have played this at every party we’ve had in the last 2 years. It’s so much fun to play with all different kinds of people, because you never know how depraved your friends & family are until this game comes out. We have the original game, plus 3 CAH  expansions and one Crabs Adjust Humidity 3rd party expansion. We even invested in the Bigger, Blacker Box to store everything. We’re hardcore about it. If you’re not familiar (have you been living under a rock?!), the gameplay is identical to Apples to Apples, but  the cards all contain pretty questionable and oftentimes sexual / politically incorrect / offensive statements. This is definitely something you want to keep 18+ – and while you might think it’s not a game to play with grandma, you’d be surprised how much fun that can actually be!

2. Game of Thrones. This is one video game that I actually manage to play – mostly because the interaction is primarily conversational decisions. It’s like an interactive movie, which is totally up my alley. I’ve only played through the first episode, but I watched my husband play through episode 2 and I’ve heard that episode 3 is really good. I just need to find time to get to them! What I love about this game is that it ties into the show without actually affecting the narrative of the show. It’s a completely separate side story, following a family that we don’t see onscreen.  I’m also a huge fan of the stylized graphics. Telltale also makes a Walking Dead game that I’ve watched my husband play and it’s obviously really good, too, but the creep-factor is a lot higher and I feel like I’d be too jumpy to be successful at that one.

3.1010! This is an iPhone game I found that has me SERIOUSLY addicted. I’m usually playing anytime I’m sitting on the couch watching TV, waiting at the doctor’s office, or pretty much anytime I have a little downtime. This is what I call a zen version of tetris. You have a grid and you’re given 3 pieces at a time that you can play anywhere on the board. You’re still trying to clear entire lines like Tetris, but the time restrictions have been eliminated. It sounds easy – and it is for the first little while – but it gets harder as you play because your pieces don’t fall once you’ve cleared a line.  If you haven’t played it, you should. But I’ll warn you, it’s like crack.

4. Pokemon. Yes. I love Pokemon games. If I start playing one, I can get so wrapped up that I’ll spend 3 days in a row playing for 5-6 hours after work. That’s probably not a good thing to admit on the internet, but that shit is addictive. I’ve loved Pokemon since the first time I saw my friends at summer camp pull out a deck of cards & start battling. I collected the cards for YEARS and eventually gave them to my high school boyfriend’s little sister, because I thought they weren’t cool anymore. That’s probably one of my most regretted decisions (*moment of silence, please*). Over the years, I’ve played through the Red, Yellow, and Blue games and when we bought kiddo her Nintendo 3DS for Christmas, I begged for Pokemon X/Y so I could play it.  As soon as kiddo learns to read, I’m getting her started. She’s already obsessed with the TV show and even asked Santa for a Pikachu for Christmas. 🙂

5. Peggle. Haha ok. I hope I don’t get judged for this. I LOVE Peggle. It’s so satisfying to take your shot & watch the ball bounce around the screen. The graphics are all psychedelic and the music is trippy, plus the characters are so over-the-top cheesy. It’s just super entertaining. My husband and I get pretty competitive & see who can get the highest score on a certain level or do the side challenges to see who can do it better. I think I love it so much because I actually stand a chance at beating him at this, where I’d never beat him at almost any other video game, ever. It’s nice to have something to  cling to.

If you can’t tell, I gravitate towards things that are low-stress and don’t require strong reflexes. I get really anxious during timed games, which makes my already abysmal accuracy just take a nosedive and I’m essentially less functional than a toddler. That’s a fact. So, I’ll stick to turn-based games and tabletop games.

I can’t wait to see what the rest of you love to play – I hope there are some good tabletop games listed, because aside from the mainstream, I’ve never really played one. It’s something I’ve been interested in trying for ages. Somebody give me some recommendations! In the meantime, you can head over to Super Space Chick‘s awesome fortress to check out everyone’s lists!

Until Next Time ❤

Five Fandom Friday: My Comfort Movies

It’s 5 Fandom Friday, again! This week’s prompt is “My Comfort Films”

I’m a movie junkie. It’s not as bad as it used to be (when I worked at a video store) but there are very few things that are as therapeutic for me than a good movie marathon.  So, when I’m feeling kind of down & need a pick-me-up, these are the films I turn to, in no particular order:

1. Edward Scissorhands. I’m a huge Tim Burton fan & Edward Scissorhands was the first Burton film I ever saw.  It’s really nostalgic for me & it’s probably my favorite Johnny Depp role. I  just don’t get tired of it. Ever.

2. Pitch Perfect. Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow, Rebel Wilson. A Capella jams. General hilarity. This is probably my most-watched movie of the last 5 years. Because duh. A lot of times I just put it on in the background for the soundtrack while I’m doing chores or something.  I’m counting down the days til the sequel!

Star Trek

3. Star Trek (2009) Really, any Star Trek movie could fill this spot, but I really love the JJ Abrams reboot. The cast is phenomenal & I love that they have been able to pay homage to the original series while still carving their own storylines. And the comedic timing is spot-on.

love you man

4. I Love You Man. Or any Jason Segel/Paul Rudd/Judd Apatow flick. This spot used to be filled by Forgetting Sarah Marshall, but I’ve been reaching for I Love You Man more & more over the last couple years. It never ceases to crack me up.

5. Clueless. This is a 90’s masterpiece. Enough said. (Oh. Hi again, Paul Rudd!)

There you have it! What are your go-to comfort films? Check out today’s link-up, hosted by The Nerdy Girlie & Super Space Chick for more!

Five Fandom Friday: My Fictional BFF’s

Well, I’ve been AWOL for a hot minute, I know. That’s a really long story that we probably don’t need to get into right at this moment. BUT, this week’s 5 Fandom Friday prompt was way too good for me to miss – Fictional BFF’s!

1. Sydney Sage (Bloodlines) – Sydney is a hardcore academic with some serious compassion & loyalty. She fights fiercely for the people she loves & I think we’d make excellent besties.

fancasting for a film adaptation that will never happen, but wouldn't this be perfect?

fancasting for a film adaptation that will never happen, but wouldn’t this be perfect?

2. Hermione Granger – Another badass bookworm; who wouldn’t want to have Hermione in their corner? This is a no-brainer.

3. Zoe (Fanboys) – I love a crass woman, and Zoe definitely fits the bill. Plus she’s a hardcore geek & I could definitely use a girlfriend to geek out with.

4. Willow Rosenberg (Buffy) – I clearly gravitate towards like-minded academia lovers, huh? Willow has been my dream BFF since I was 10.

5. Cisco Ramon (The Flash) – I can’t help but smile any time Cisco is in a scene on Flash. He’s my absolute favorite. I love his cheesy nicknames for meta humans & his bad jokes. He just is who he is & he never apologizes for it.

Every single one of these characters is intelligent, a little quirky, and insanely loyal/compassionate. Those are the three most important characteristics to me in a friend.  Imagine the hijinks we’d all get into together….muahahaha.

Until Next Time ❤
